White pants: yay or nay?

Hello everyone! Do you wear white pants around your kids?

I love white pants, especially for summer. Yet after my son was born six year ago, I discovered how unrealistic it can be to wear them around kids, especially younger ones. Outing at the park in white pants? Nay. Restaurant dining in white pants with the risk of spills and food stains? No thanks.

I took my white pants out of retirement when my son turned five years old, and even then in moderation. The whole time, I envied those moms who seem to have discovered a secret spell to keep their white pants white (beginning with my Italian mother-of-three best friend).

As a pair of white "perfect boot" jeans (one of the few styles that fits great my post-pregnancy body) popped out from GAP's clearance rack during my last visit, I tought, what the heck. I still have to shed the baby weight but if Michelle Obama can rock white pants at the White House Easter Egg Roll, why can't I? After all, didn't I tell you that I scored the striped floral t-shirt by J Crew she wore before it sold out? And that one kills two other spring trends (florals and stripes). Voilá.

On nursing wear

Hello everyone! Did you invest in nursing top and dresses when your children were born?

During my last trip to Apso Bibi before my son was born, I tried on and almost bought a couple of nursing tops. As the bill was already substantial due to the other stuff I had to buy for the end of my pregnancy, in the end I put them aside. I thought about most people I know, and realized that I have never seen virtually any of them wearing nursing tops when they were breastfeeding. Plus I was not even sure whether I was going to need them, because with my son I had to start pumping and bottle-feeding shortly after he was born.

Since this time breastfeeding went well from the beginning and I'd like to continue until my baby boy is at least six months old, this time I really pondered the issue more closely. I ended up in the "against nursing top" court. Two main reasons. First, I am already not a big fan of maternity wear, and the latter is ten times prettier than nursing wear. Second, something gotta give -- I have to already invest some money in regular clothing because it will be a while before I fit back into my pre-pregnancy clothing. Third, I preferred to invest into a good nursing bra.

If you ever nursed, you know that you need at least a couple of those. I purchased them while I was still pregnant, because they seemed such a good investment at the time. Nonetheless, of the six nursing bra I own, I discovered that none of them was comfortable to accommodate my engorged breast when I started breastfeeding. Plus, have you ever tried to hit the road without a camisole when it is minus 20 degrees Celsius outside?

This is why I did some research about nursing camisoles. Let me tell you, the options are limited. Camisoles without support keep your "stuff" way too lose. Those with a bralette can be too tight. (And stay away from this one by Molly Ades because the bralette is actually too small to fit the cup size it is intended for! Tried and tossed.) I ended up falling in love with Thyme Maternity's Nursing Cami with Shaping Liner (pictured above). At 40$ a pop, it is very reasonably priced. The material is thick and it really does slim the tummy area. Plus, it is almost waterproof -- a blessing for those occasional leaks. Totally recommended!

P.S. For the best of me I could not find any pretty nursing top, but if you are interested to go down this road you may want to check out the exhaustive feature in The Guardian...

On my mind

Hello everyone! Did you have a good week?

There have been a lot of things on my mind in April, although not many ended up on paper. Actually, most of them ended up on paper, but remained unfinished :)

My biggest accomplishment this month was to celebrate the blog's second anniversary. I really cannot believe how fast the time has flown by! Thank you all again for your support.

Anita Bitton's interview for the Glow. I love what she said about becoming a mom:
"The most surprising thing about being a mother is that you become a super hero overnight.
A multi-tasking, problem solving goddess. I know that when I see other parents, that they know that
I'm a super hero, too. If you're lucky, you'll get to wear a cloak and a mask (I do sometimes),
otherwise you just achieve it daily in disguise."

Happy Blogiversary!

Hello everyone! Do you know what special occasion we celebrate today?

Today is our second blogiversary! I cannot believe two years have already gone by. You may not remember, but I started this blog on the eve of my sabbatical leave. Little I knew then that, after spending that period in Milan, I would have gotten pregnant and I would have celebrated this milestone with another little one by my side (literally, he is nursing now). I also could have never imagined how rewarding this journey was going to be. Thank you, each and everyone of the 20,000 people who have visited us and read and commented along!

Last year, I celebrated our first blogiversary with a special interview. This year, considering I have my hands full with the arrival of the little one, I mainly worked on the blog's layout. After last year's redesign, I tweaked it a bit by adding a link to my Tumblr feed, Diary of a fashionable mom, and by beginning to add categories (more will follow, so stay tuned). I hope these changes make it easier to navigate the blog and access its content. Yours comments, as usual, are much appreciated!

Valentino vs Valentino

Hello everyone! Would you like to help me with a little dilemma?

You may remember that, due to pregnancy-related swelling, I am left with just two pairs of heels that fit me at the moment. I am thus considering investing in a second pair of Valentino Rockstud heels, but I am undecided between these two styles. Which one would you choose? I love the stud detailing on the heel of the second one, but black goes with everything...

P.S. Remember my Prada vs Prada dilemma?

Last ones standing

Hello everyone! Did your shoe size change when you got pregnant?

With my first pregnancy, I gained approximately half a size, which I eventually lost after about a year. This time my feet did not swell as much so I thought I had escaped the size gain, but I was wrong. This morning I reviewed all my shoes and I had to pretty much store them all! Aside from a few ballerinas I had acquired after my first pregnancy, the only two pairs of heels standing are my Tod's suede mid-heels (this suede is a somewhat miraculous material that stretches just in the right amount) and my Valentino Rockstud heels (probably because they are open in the back). The question is: can I manage until the summer with just these two pairs of shoes? (Another great excuse for investing in that second pair of Valentino Rockstud heels, right?)

The sleek wedge sneaker

Hello everyone! What do you think of wedge sneakers?

Cool French label Isabel Marant launched them last spring, and they went sold out in spite of the (one could say outrageous) price tag. Many imitations and followers later, the high-top wedge sneaker is still going strong this season. I am not sure how you feel about them, but in my view they are too clunky. This is why I rejoiced when I found this pair of Geox "Illusion" sneakers a couple of days ago! Very sleek, and on trend.

P.S. I could not find online a picture of the exact pair I saw in the store in downtown Montreal. It was actually even nicer-looking, since it was a bit darker and sparkly...

The importance of tailoring

Hello everyone! Do you have a tailor?

Most fashion advisers will swear by the power of good tailoring, and I could not agree more. Sometimes all it takes is a just little pinch!

I rediscovered the truth of this predicament once more now that I am out of my clothing comfort zone because of the pregnancy-related weight gain. Remember the once-loved-then-hated J Brand jeans I recently purchased? After my Italian tailor (I know, I know) pinched the waist they are not falling off anymore, and I can be in love with them again! Even my beloved legging jeans benefitted from the same treatment and a little shortening.

If you do not have a tailor go out and find one! It is totally worth it.

P.S. I love this Singer sewing machine. My dad inherited one from my grandmother, and one can still find the buttons of my grandfather's uniform (he was a fire marshall during the Second World War) in the drawer. My dream is to get it restored and bring it here in our house one day.

Alt Summit for everyone!

Hello everyone! Have you ever attended Alt Summit?

It has been one of my dreams since I started blogging but so far my other life events (sabbatical in far away Europe, pregnancy) have not made it possible. Lucky for me, I could sign up for its online version, which is scheduled for May 16-18. I cannot wait!

If you are interested, you can register here. Hurry, classes are limited to 100 attendees!

On my mind

Hello everyone! Did you have a good week?

Last night my baby boy slept, for the first time, for four hours straight. He also fell back asleep in the early morning, so that we all woke up at 9 am. It really felt like a Sunday morning :)

I am so jazzed with sleep that I feel I could take over the world! Hence, here comes a retrospective on what has been on my mind in March...

Meet my spring makeup friends

Last Friday I braved the morning snow and ensuing rain (I do not want to talk about either of them, because it is APRIL) to go downtown and exchange the jeans I recently got from GAP. The secondary objective of this outing was to freshen up my spring makeup.

I am not exaggerating if I say that I look, well, green. Lack of sun, lack of sleep, lack of pregnancy hormones, lack of commitment on most days. You pick. The results are a dull complexion and those deep, puffy circles under my eyes.

Just a few weeks ago I had vowed to get back in sync with my body image by, among other things, resuming a beauty routine. This has proved the most difficult task on my list because keeping beauty appointments with a seven-weeks old does just not happen. Plus, now that my baby boy spends more time being awake, putting makeup on in the morning feels like trying to disconnect a ticking bomb. This is why Chanel's promise of a healthy glow stroke a cord. I thus took advantage of my outing downtown to pick up the incriminated powder, and in the process I got also a miraculous concealer, a gloss and a eye cream. Even my husband noticed the difference once I got home!

Let's just see how am I able to keep up in putting it on in the morning...

SS13 trends | It's just black and white

Hello everyone! Are you following our coverage of the spring trends?

On Monday, I talked about zip ankle jeans. Today I'd like to turn to one of the key spring palettes. Remember the team of Vogue Paris pictured in this post? Or the March 2013 cover of Fashion magazine? Black and white is EVERYWHERE.

It can take the form of a classic white blouse + black pants pairing (or vice versa), of head-to-toe black with white accents (according to Net-a-Porter's latest edit, black is the new black for summer), and everything in between. It has been reinvented with geometric shapes, from polka dots to zig-zags like in the picture above (via Jak and Jil at Paris Fashion Week), and Michelle Obama proves that goes great with florals.

Do not worry that it is too seasonal -- Burberry has done it on its Fall 2013 runway in the form of more stripes and animal prints...

P.S. If you would like to shop this trend keep checking our Pinterest board, or my favorite black and white edits: Net-a-porter (here), Holt Renfrew (here and here), and Bergdorf Goodman (here and here).

SS13 trends | The zip ankle jeans

Hello everyone! Have you started embracing the new spring trends?

I am still working on a proper editorial for SS13 but I'd like to introduce you to a few trends that can already be easily incorporated in your everyday wear even if the outside temperature is still hesitating around freezing (as it is the case here in Canada, in the Northastern United States, and in most European countries).

Let me begin with the ubiquitous zip ankle jeans. My favorite are those by Anine Bing, which the likes of Jane Aldrige have been spotted wearing. Zara offers, as usual, the look for less -- in a pair of somewhat mid waist moto jeans that I found last week in the store (but could not find online).

And if jeans are not for you, you can always opt for the ladylike denim trend introduced by Miu Miu...

P.S. I have been hunting down a pair of front zip ankle jeans like those above, without any luck. Do you have any suggestions?

Back to single digits

Hello everyone! Did you have a good week?

I ended the week with a personal bang. Yesterday, I went to exchange two pairs of jeans I had gotten recently from GAP for a smaller size! Although I have not yet shed a single gram of the baby weight, I must be either less bloated or better capable of figuring out the most flattering pants shape for me right now. Whatever. I went down from a size 10 to a size 8, and I felt thinner already.

Choosing a diaper bag

Hello everyone! What diaper bag would you recommend to a new mom?

Hollywood stars have made designer diaper bags famous: from Rachel Zoe's Alexander McQueen black tote to Sandra Bullock's custom-made Louis Vuitton Speedy for her son Louis. I think we all agree, however, that spending one grand or more on a diaper bag is not within everyone's reach. There is also the issue of whether, should you have the money to buy a designer bag, you would really spend it on a diaper bag, rather than go for that Celine handbag that would last you a lifetime, and definitely well after your kids are out of diapers.

A diaper bag is still one of the essential items a new mom needs. This is why it is the first thing I concentrated on when I was getting ready for my baby boy's arrival (all right, in small part it was also because I am a bit, just a bit, obsessed about handbags). When my son was born six years ago, I had not realized how much the diaper bag would have become part of my daily wear. I chose a cheap one, and by the time I realized that I really loathed to be seen in public carrying it, my son was a bit older, so it seemed silly to invest a lot of money to fix my original mistake. Hence I bought another cheap diaper bag. Before you know it, I think I bought at least four cheap diapers bag, and I did not like any of them. They thus all ended up at the local consignment store as soon as I bought the first pair of training diapers for my son.

As I started afresh with our new arrival, I think what I have learnt can help you as well. Let me begin by saying that strictly speaking you do not need to buy a diaper bag. Any bag you already own that fits your needs will do the trick. A couple of things to consider before you convert your Louis Vuitton Neverfull into a diaper bag though. First, you should not worry about the outside or inside of the bag getting stained -- which will likely happen sooner rather than later (think about that baby bottle with a too-loosely-screwed cap you will eventually throw in). Second, at some point that insulated pocket may come in handy. (Just saying)

There are a lot of "frilly" baby bags out there. When I looked for buying a new diaper bag, my challenge was finding one that could be mistaken for a regular bag -- one that does not scream mommy, and that will not embarrass you even if you bump into your boss or childless ultra-fashionable best friend at the grocery store. I knew that the diaper bag wad going to hang mainly from my stroller, but that I would have not carried a regular purse most of the time so that my wallet, keys and cell phone were going to fit in there as well. I considered Rebecca Minkoff Knocked up Baby Bag and Marc by Marc Jacobs Preppy Nylon Eliz-a-Baby Bag (both available through Shopbop). I also reviewed many mid- to high-end diaper bags such as those by Emporio Armani and Cavalli available through Children's salon. I have to confess that the price tag was the main deterrent in all these cases. As much as I knew I was going to use it a lot and for at least a year, I could not bring myself to spend 350$ or more on baby bag.

That's when I stumbled upon the Holy Graal: the Skip Hop Versa diaper bag (pictured above), priced at about 80$. Its sturdy, waterproof nylon and golden hardware give it a quintessential Tod's feel. It is also functional: it has five front pockets (two of which are insulated), one back zippered pocket with a changing mat, and four internal pockets for all your knick knacks. If you live in Montreal, you can go and check it out at Thyme Maternity and Kido BebĂ©. Otherwise you can order it online through Amazon.

P.S. More new-mom essentials here.

The suitcase

Hello everyone! How did you prepare for your baby's arrival?

I had planned on writing a few posts about my own preparations before my baby boy surprised us all and arrived three weeks early. Although I may have not written about it, I was fortunately not completely unprepared! My older son had also been born ahead of schedule, so I had done a few essential things that I still regret to have missed the first time.

I spent quite some time thinking about what to take to the hospital. When my older son was born, I did not even have my suitcase ready, and most of the baby clothes I had bought were loose (I discovered then that a size 0-3 months is generally too big for a newborn). I thus had to instruct my husband how to search for my things at home, and send my mom (who had flown in from Italy a couple of days after my son's birth) hunting for newborn clothing. I am sure you can understand that this time I did not want a repeat :)

Preparing my own suitcase was easy. A couple of nightgowns, a robe, plenty of underwear, and a pair of slippers were the main items, together with a few beauty products.

I concentrated my efforts on preparing a separate bag for the baby, in order to make it easier for me and my husband to find his things quickly. I dreamed about investing in a beautiful bag such as Louis Vuitton Keepall 45 (all right, I have been looking for excuses to buy this bag for a while now), but the price tag acted once again as the main deterrent (I am not Sandra Bullock, after all, who had such a bag personalized for her son in occasion of his adoption). I thus opted for this Jacadi's travel bag, which is adorable-baby-looking, very roomy, and with just the right mount of pockets. At the bottom of the bag I packed a fleece onesie, a snowsuit, a fleece hat, and a fleece blanket for bringing the baby home from the hospital. Then I layered two long-sleeves and two short-sleeves bodysuit (hospital room temperature can be quite hard to predict, in any season), three footed ong-sleeves onesies, a cotton hat, and two light cotton blanket for swaddling. The hospital required us to bring our own pampers and wipes, so these went right at the top.

After my baby boy's birth I complimented myself on my own organization. I had just the right amount of stuff, and the only thing we ended up not using was the snowsuit, since our car seat was lined with J J Cole Bundle Me Car Cover. The travel bag is a wonderful keepsake, and I am sure will get plenty of use in the summer!

I'll take one in every color

Hello everyone! Would you ever buy the exact same item in multiple colours?

I have never done that, but lately I broke this barrier. I would have ordered this Topshop sweater in black as well, but it sold out. Fortunately I was able to find these Club Monaco merino sweaters in multiple colors, and I am considering a couple of extra patterns for my beloved GAP legging jeans...

Revenge of the GAP (aka ode to the legging jeans)

Hello everyone! What is the thing you hate the most in a pair of jeans?

For me, it is the fact that it may stretch around the waist just enough to keep sliding down your hips taking your underpants along for the ride. Unfortunately, the J Brand mid-waist rail jeans I recently bought belong to this category. I was so happy with them after my first stints at jeans-buying that I had seriously considered getting the same style in other washes. The price tag stopped me then, and I am glad it did.

The good news is that the GAP legging jeans stay put even after intensive wear! NTS: always take a new pair of jeans for a spin around the house before cutting the tag off.
